Tipping when collecting the hire car

After booking in at the hire car desk, we are normally greeted in the car park by a very cheerful person who tells us they are going to look after us.

We are then lead to the car we are going to be using and handed the keys.

Should we be tipping at this point? If so how much?

Nor do Avis, from my own experience. They just wave vaguely to a row of cars and disappear.

Had this years ago with various companies, late 80's early 90's. They would put your suitcases in the trunk and show you the drivers controls etc. I just used to say I'm OK and don't need any help.

I well remember the Dollar Guys who insisted on taking you down the tunnel just to cross the road!
Scam artists, as I used to point out the garage is behind your desk! Stop messing me around.

I don't tip any garage Guy unless they get me something I have asked for.
Maybe 3 years ago there were no Cadillac saloons in the row so I asked if they had one. He ran over to National, got me a nearly brand new one and proceeded to black the tyres!
He was plastered in tyre black so I gave him $10.
That was well worth it as the car was immaculate.

I had this at Sanford a couple of years ago but was obviously going to upgrade us for a tip which we did, if someone is showing you to the cars I think they are waiting for you to ask about a better car which you will tip for

This was Alamo two years ago but it was at Sanford. I wasn't offered another car and didn't think to ask as happy with the one we had.

Just asking as we’re off again next month and wanted to check etiquette.

I had this with Alamo the one and only time we've been to Sanford. Personally I would only tip if they go the extra mile. After chatting with the guy for a while he gave us an upgrade, so he got a tip. Make them work for it ;-)

I wouldn’t have thought so, unless as Tom stated- they upgrade you or do something to warrant it. We had to return our hire car a couple of years ago due to a puncture. We rang Alamo having stopped as the tyre was flat, we changed the wheel for the spare and were advised to bring in the car for a swap. We swapped the car and benefitted as the fuel was full on the replacement so we tipped the guy $10 as he was really helpful.
