Washington Dullas - Transit

Hi,

Anyone been indirect through Washington Dullas before? Is it easy to navigate? What are the immigration queues like?

Going through mid July.

Cheers

Mark

The worst bit about Dulles connections can be the dreaded mobile lounges they use to get arriving international passengers to the FIS (Customs & Immigration) area in either Concourse C or the main terminal.

If you fly into Dulles with United, you should avoid them for certain. Arrive on any other airline & you stand a chance of being allocated a gate not on Concourse C or the main terminal, which means you have to be mobile-lounged.

I agree with this, I love the lounges when you are leaving at Dulles.

But if you are flying with united, it can very quick. We usually catch the 0730 red eye from Heathrow. Which is rarely busy and most are travelling to Washington so transfer is very quiet. It often gets in slightly early too.

Our longest time from exiting the first plane to getting to our departure gate (with a potbelly sandwich) is 28 minutes.

It is easy to navigate around and there are a lot of staff around to help. Once you have cleared customs there are a lot of places to eat and drink.

I flew into Dulles for work in August and it was absolute mayhem in the international arrivals hall. This was on a Saturday and landing time was around 15:00 as far as I can remember. I've never seen so many people and ended up waiting 2 hours to get through immigration (all that time people just kept piling into the immigration hall nonstop) I don't know if that was a one off or fairly normal but I distinctly remember thinking I'd never book a connecting flight via Dulles as there were loads of people in the line that I got talking to that were going to miss their connections.
