Triple heart bypass. What to expect?
My dad is due to go in to hospital next weekend for a triple heart bypass. He and my mum live a few hours away from us and are having to self isolate prior to the op.
I know he's very anxious about it all, and so am I. Has anyone any experience of this? I think he'll be in hospital for about 6-10 days after the op. I know recovery will take some time. If I were to send him some books/puzzles before he goes in, do you think he'd be in any fit state to actually read them/do the puzzles whilst in hospital ? Or should I wait until he's home? Not overly sure of the point of this thread, guess I'm just after some reassurance that others have been through it and come out the other side ok. I think I'm more worried because the last time he was in hospital (several years ago) for a routine operation, it went horribly wrong due to an error made during the op. Sorry for the rambling! |

I kńow a few people who have had triple heart bypasses done over the years and they are all doing great and glad they had it done. It's a fairly common operation nowadays so don't worry because your dad will be fine.
I would suggest sending him the books and puzzles. Even the NHS link below says after 6 weeks he should even be energetic enough to drive (and to have nookie). nhs.uk/conditions/corona...cabg/recovery/ |

Both my dad and fil had triple bypasses. Dad was home within 10 days. He seemed good in hospital but it was 24-25 years ago. They made them get up and dressed from day 3-4. He had the vein taken from the same area, not sure of name. However fil had one taken from his calf and had more pain from that! Dad still read his newspaper so I’m guessing yours will enjoy the books you have got although I remember Dad also had a leaflet saying he may struggle with concentration for a few weeks due to the anaesthetic. Good luck to your dad, it gave both of ours another 20 years xx

I would send them, it’s better him having them and not feeling upto it, then being sat bored, especially when they make him get up and sit in the chair ect.
Other then that, I know a few people who’ve had/family have had, and they are doing perfectly well now, medication & a few dietary changes but otherwise okay!

When my dad had his done the people in ITC who had it done the same day , were sitting up the next day so I’m sure he’ll be able read etc if he wants to .
I know one of the patients was in a terrible condition just a few days before the op and within a few days of having it the change in him was quite remarkable literally a new person . Unfortunately we were in the very small percentage where it wasn’t the typical straight forward operation with good results . |

My Dad had a quadruple by pass some years ago. He was up and about within a couple of days and home in 10 days. It made a huge difference to his life so the short term pain of the op was very much the long term gain.
One abiding memory was that there were heart transplant patients on the same ward and a week after their transplants they were on the cycle machine kept at the end on the ward - very inspiring! Best wishes to your Dad xx |
