Sky to charge you to upgrade to HDR if you have an incompatible Sky Q box
Not really a surprise and had heard rumours this was going to be the case.
That Sky Q box that you rent is not so much on an upgrade path. If your Sky Q box is one of the older non HDR compatible boxes and you want HDR then you are going to have to pay for it. forbes/sites/johnarc.../#2c6b39fc7e6e You will be charged £50 if you have a 2Tb box and £25 if you have a 1Tb box. You will also have to send back the old one. Haven't checked but I would assume you will also lose all of you recordings. So check first and watch anything you haven't beforehand. |

Surprised it couldn’t deal with HDR- even the Virgin box does that. To be honest I can’t notice the difference on my OLED TV so wouldn’t pay for it.

It's not even a complex version. It only supports HLG format which is the most basic you can get. They are not supporting either HDR10+ or Dolby Atmos.
Bit like the old HD boxes could only even do 1080i and not 1080p. Sky Italy have had it working for a while, haven't looked to see if their older hardware was different though. It's the fact that Sky tell you that you are renting the box and do not own it, so why should people have to pay to stay up to date. Not personally effected as our box is compatible. Not that there is much in the way of content yet though. |
