Depends on who your car rental is with, it may be already fully insured , e.g. BA/Avis whilst other 'free/included' cars where you have to pay the insurance on top means it's cheaper to not pick up the car at all & book your own inclusive rental instead.

Check what you are covered for - a basic cover is not enough and upgrades through a TA works out expensive - better off not taking the hire car and booking your own with appropriate cover. Driving is easy over there but be prepared - make sure you have a sat nav - it will make the journey to your accommodation much less stressful after a long flight. Took us a couple of days to fully get used to driving over there but really enjoyed it and both hubby and I fought over the keys lol

Thats it I think, maybe a few tolls as well. However what you are getting is total flexibility and convenience to do what you want when you want.

There's a very useful DIBB driving guide on here recently updated by my friend Mr Morrow (may I call you Tom?) with a minor input from yours truly.

Let me know if you want me to link it here

Sorry to bump this thread, has anyone arranged thier own Hire Car Insurance?
I have a free hire car with ThomasCook through Alamo, the insurance is not included.
TC want to charge me £400 for Gold insurance for 2 weeks.
I checked the cost of booking the same car through Alamo Brits and with the Gold Insurance it was £290.

I was just wondering if it's worth booking my own insurance and going with the free car.

Any help is very much appreciated.

There are 2 people on here who to my knowledge have used a UK Broker. I won't touch it. Not for me.

Your experience with topping up insufficient insurance with the so called "free" car is very common on the DIBB. If you can get the fully insured car for £290 then just ditch the "free" car. Simply don't pick it up.

so £110 cheaper ... just book the alamo car & drop TC a note to say you wont be using the 'free' car, thats what we did a couple of years ago in the same circumstances

personally wouldnt chance getting my own insurance...
