Mr and Mrs T. Our West Coast adventure May 2016 - Saturday, May 14 Relaxing day and it was chilly!

Not up early today after what had a been a busy few days.

On the advice of our server Sandy we decided to drive up to the National Cabrillo Monument. It was not that far away so did not take us long to drive there. Cost $10 to get in and finding somewhere to park was easy.

The national monument is situated at the tip of the Point Loma Peninsula. Although it was a cloudy, chilly day we could see the coastline of Tijuana in the distance.

Not sure who lives in the houses below but they were rather close to the sea!

It was a very interesting few hours spent wondering around. There is a lighthouse that is no longer in use but you can go round.

Signs like this meant we did spend a lot of time looking around the undergrowth!

It was cloudy today but we could still see Shelter Island in the distance

The views were wonderful especially looking over the naval base even though it was cloudy. On a clear day it must be spectacular.

What was very sad was the naval cemetery that you look down on. Row upon row of white headstones facing the water. Would not even try to guess how many servicemen were buried there.

On our way out we could have stopped and had a walk round but it did not seem right and I did not want to intrude on the peace and tranquillity of the place.

Left and made our way to Old Town but being a weekend it was packed with nowhere to park plus there were many streets that were blocked off so parking was at a premium.

Sandy had mentioned Ocean Beach so put that into the satnav and off we went but not before searching out a Walmart, I cant remember what area it was located but I think we were the only non Mexicans in the whole store!

Made our way to Ocean Beach and parked up. Gave the impression of a seaside place which was very popular with bikers.

Walked down to the sea front where they have a pier that is T-shaped. Did not venture onto it as it was a really chilly.

Slow walk back to the car where the hotel was put into the satnav.

Would have liked to take the tour, maybe another time!

Chose a route back that took us past Petco Park, Seaport Village and USS Midway. Everywhere was so busy today with it being a Saturday.

Back to the hotel where packing was done to the next stage of our trip tomorrow – Palm Springs.

Meal in the restaurant at the hotel. Again a really nice meal. Said our goodbyes to Sandy and left the hotel for a final walk along the boardwalk.

The beach was busy with groups of people sitting round fires, some cooking barbeques. A really lovely way to spend an evening.

Elaine had a fright as a navy jet took off from the base over the water. After burners on, the noise was amazing as it lifted off into the sky. She did not know whether to scream, cry or run. Sorry I laughed!

Late evening sun gave a us a lovely view of some of the skyscrapers in the city

Back to the room where time was spent talking about our experiences of San Diego. Loved what we had done over the past couple of days and really wished we were here longer. Maybe another time!
