Mobile Paid private for chicken pox vaccine for daughter... now she has chicken pox!

After reading a few stories on the Dibb of people having close calls with holidays and children with chicken pox, we decided to get our daughter immunised. First injection 10 days ago and yesterday she developed chicken pox! Unable to send into nursery. There aren't loads and seem to have small heads but obviously more could develop. Has anyone ever had a similiar experience?

According to the NHS website, 9/10 children become immune after the vaccine and both doses are recommended, so it looks as though your daughter is in the 1/10 who don't develop immunity, or at least not enough. I've also read somewhere that children who have had the vaccine and still get chicken pox generally have it in a much milder form.

So hopefully she won't be too poorly and will soon be all better, and at least you know for sure she won't get it just before your holiday!

Thanks, we have to go back for 2nd dose in a few weeks, I wondered whether she has an outbreak as a consequence of it being a live vaccine?

Maybe it was already in her system as it can take up to 3 weeks. You could just be unlucky and she actually came into contact with it before she had the jab. I hope she doesn't get it too bad and is feeling better soon.

You need to have had both doses of the vaccine to prevent against getting it so its likely that she got infected from somewhere else before you had the 1st one done probably nursery as the incubation period is upto 21 days.

Hope she's better soon.

My friend has had a right old time of it with chicken pox recently - her five year old caught it and was covered in them. Just got her to scabbing over stage and sending her back to school when her 6 month old baby caught it! Endless chicken pox it seemed...

Argh isn't that just the was!

I believe you have to have had both injections to be considered immune and as someone else said there is a chance it still won't work.

The incubation period is up to 21 days, when did she have her first injection? Also not sure there's any point to having the 2nd jab as she will now have natural immunity.

DS 7 had chicken pox while we were in Florida at Easter. It was a pain and a bit of a worry as we were a week from being due to fly home! At least she's had it now and you have plenty of time before your holiday from them to clear up and not have to worry 😊
