Mobile Cats - warning about Profender worming treatment

What a stress I’ve had today with Jasper! Here he is to liven up the story (and he’s fine by the way)

He was at the vets on Friday for his boosters, all straightforward. I purchased some Profender spot on worm treatment as previously we had bought stuff you had to give him via syringe and it was a real pain to use. My previous cat had used Profender with no issues.

I gave him this yesterday and then this morning noticed he was really unsteady on his back legs, he was also salivating a lot. I was really worried - about 3 years ago we had a cat who suddenly lost the use of his legs and died, still not sure why.

I went to work and rang the vets, they said they wanted to see him. So straight back home, up to the vets, poor Jasper stressed out.

It turns out he’s had a very rare (as in 1 in 10,000) side effect to the Profender medication, which is a neurological issue that can cause shaking legs and loss of use of legs.

Thankfully he was already starting to look better and it should just get better by itself. Advice from vet - don’t use Profender again! I was really shocked as I’ve used it so regularly in the past.

So a bit of a heads up for those with cats and also just a bit of a rant! Left my boy at home and he seemed fine and went out into the sunshine. Me - back to work of course!

Blimey that was a close call, so pleased he’s ok. My Eric has worming pills not drops but I will just check the name.

It’s just worry after worry with little pets ! XX

I've had problems with Advantage flea treatment my poor cat was very poorly and had a bald spot for weeks. My springer had a dreadful reaction with the mi pet (enecterid) the vet issued under the pet plan. He was so ill lost a lot of weight had horrendous diarrhoea. I've refused the stuff ever since. He ended up on pain killers antibiotics and a probiotic. It's evil stuff. Looked online after and there's quite a few cases of severe reactions including neurological problems. Glad your cat has improved.

Poor boy.

We use Broadline flea & worm from the vet. Goes on back of neck with syringe (no needle).

Our old girl Spikey was never bothered by it. Will have to see how our new girl Cookie reacts!

They’re such a worry at times. Was just so surprised as I’ve used this product regularly for years and never had an issue until now. I suppose that’s the thing about side effects, even the rare ones can and do happen!

See this worries me as my vet just recommended this for me to use (currently on Frontline for flea treatment but vet said some fleas are becoming resistant to it).

I was also fed up of trying to administer worming meds and bought some dronspot wormer and my little female cat is now sporting a bald patch! I rang the vet and they said as long as not other symptoms just keep an eye and she is going for her boosters tonight so will get her double checked but won’t be using it again.

Oh goodness, poor Jasper glad he is okay. I use profender spot on worm treatment as my cat is a nightmare when trying to get her to take worming tablets.
