I don't like I need to justify my thoughts and feelings to others... but...

Its always been clear to me there are many different things in life that happen to someone and they can't be compared to other things...

A family member becoming seriously / terminally ill or passing away is a differen't level of grief and devastation that be compared to anything else.

Then you have issues like people becoming homeless and having seriously money issues etc which again is a level of personal disaster than again is hard to compare.

Then you have things like this where you have invested massive somes of money (all be it ultimately disposable) and it not worked out how they imagined. I think to call it trivial is quite dismissive and mean spirited. I spent £16k for for of us to have one big huge trip to the Mouse. Taken a few hits, and now with the castle its a hit too far. Its far from trivial to see a £16k investment coming up short. Its certainly a sum of money I can't easily come up with again. I feel I need to protect it and get the most I can from it.

There are other issues around this I am not going into but getting to the point of cancelling the holiday was a huge decision we are devastated by it. Yeah no one died, but life is more involved and complex sometimes.

Truly happy some people aren't bothered by it. I hope it all turns out well in the future.

I do understand some guests being dissapointed about the "perceieved" state of the castle - but we are speculating.

If I wanted a photo in front of the castle I would still go ahead and have one taken but probably use the Depth of field/live focus/ portait mode settings on the photo device to blur the detail of the castle a bit so as to reduce the impact of any work being done on the castle.

In my opinion I don't think you can compare the work being done on the castle with tron or working being done inside spaceship earth because the castle is the icon of MK and you can't see the work which will go on inside spaceship earth until it has been completed.

EPCOT is a building site at the moment but I look forward to seeing it in rejuivinated state - IMHO these transformations are long overdue.

I think it is absolutely inevitable, that any thread you start where you express an opinion or take a personal stance, will receive some replies with a contrary view and some of which will be very candid and direct.

I would be staggered if any thread starter, living in the current technological world, would not consider this before pressing new thread.

With the initial post the OP stated clearly that they were thinking of cancelling because of potential scaffolding and work at Epcot.3 hours later after many differing comments the holiday had been cancelled and once again the OP chose to post this.

Subsequently the OP suggested that there were other issues why he/she had cancelled and the castle refurb was the straw that broke the camels back. If that had been posted initially then perhaps there would have been an overall softer response from some of the dibber community?

The moral is, that we should all think carefully about what we post and what we say and be totally prepared for the consequences of that.

Have a good day dibbers.

I can't believe this thread has got to 18 pages! It's obviously touched a nerve with so many points of view.

It's a shame that iconic views of the Castle and other sites with in the other Parks are being updated but it won't spoil my holiday. There will never be a good time to do major works but they have to get done. 1st timers will be overwhelmed by the whole Disney Experience anyway!
Magical memories can still be recreated and just to say, we've used the D Springs photo shop places, good fun 😀

I will state that I was a Disney vacation planner for many years and was lucky to have familiarisation trips. I work for an airline now so don't know the ins and outs but I will put my perspective on this...

Yes, it is a first world problem but emotions are all relative in that we have never experienced living in a third world state and therefore cannot physically comprehend the emotion that those in real poverty go through.

It's subjective. What may seem trivial to one person may not be to another.

I've booked dream holidays for many people. And when I say dream, these were people who were fulfilling bucket lists or making memories with their sometimes seriously ill relatives/children. Such as make a wish.
Then there was others who had saved a lifetime and this was truly a one off.
Others included people who recently lost their partners who come to a happy place.

To see the castle is a highly emotional event for some people. When they enter the park and see it and cry those happy tears. They are there to make memories. They don't want the memory of a boarded up castle.

So whilst people spout off that it's hardly the end of the world, why not take a walk in other people's shoes and realise that this COULD actually be devastating memory for them.

I understand why people are upset but I’m sure it will still be possible to get a nice castle photo with the scrim.

Both of our WDW trips (2010 and 2014) took years to save for, and there was major construction around during both. There always will be somewhere. It didn’t spoil anything.

When we first took our friends to DLP, the castle was covered by a scrim during refurb. It still looked beautiful from a distance.

DH told our friends’ kids that ‘Aurora had the painters in’. Cue collapse of the kids’ father, who knew what that was a euphemism for...!

All I was doing was saying that I don't think people are being unkind and why. If people are devastated and upset about the castle stuff that's fair enough. I was simply saying that I don't think people are actually being unkind in what they say, they just have a different viewpoint and there's nothing wrong with that.

However I don't think I got no chance if I say to my girls that we are pulling this years hols' as there might be a bit of scaffolding up on the castle... even if I wanted to... which I don't... as nothing can be worst than when the castle was tarted up as a Pink Birthday cake... and I mean NOTHING...

OP - just out of interest did you ask your family what they think? If not they might actually be OK with it if you ask them. Or was it a done deal, ie you just cancelled the holiday and told them.
