What’s for dinner? We re stuck in a rut!
What’s for dinner tonight?
Can anyone recommend any recipes I could try. I’m stuck in such a rut-made even trickier that my asd daughter and son (not asd just copies his big sister) are so fussy. They won’t try new things. Thank you |

I know it's really hard, there is light at the end of the tunnel though.
I have 2 sons (19&13)19 year old has ASD. For years he wouldn't eat potatoes, he would only eat vegetables if they were green, the food couldn't touch, unless it was a stew or casserole, so that's what I mainly made Irish stew, curry, Bolognese, pasta bakes and lasagne and as you said the younger on just follows and will only eat what the big brother eats. Now my big son will eat everything going, even meat and veg dinners which he would never touch. He loves potatoes now and any kind of meat and his veg can be any colour. So hang in there, hopefully their tastes will widen. Just gently introduce new foods to existing dinners. That's what I did but I am sure my sons had the same weekly dinners for about 4 years but it was still a varied diet and the Doc said if they eat it, stick with it.

Can you get them involved in cooking, maybe making pizzas, peeling carrots, rollling up meatballs and making kebabs. My kids used to love helping and then they would want to eat some at the end.

Foods must not touch! I should also say my daughter has very strong sensory issues. Some food smells make her retch- meat and cheese, cooking smells. She used to be ok but as she’s getting older she’s getting worse. My son eats bread, pizza, meat, crisps and apples, no potatoes, pasta, rice, vegetables. The only meal they will eat all of is a happy meal. I’ve tried making my own but it’s not the same.
If I was super rich I’d employ a chef! |

It can be difficult working through the different fads. At times DD has lived on practically nothing, (pasta and hotdogs, for all meals including breakfast!) but she has changed her eating over the years, but tends to eat the same thing for a couple of weeks then change. I agree with getting them to help cook, that has helped. Even with DD very limited diet at its worst we had to do a dietician diary where they analyse what she has ate, she was only lacking iron and thiacin, so try not to worry too much. I know it can be difficult tho!

I’m stuck in a rut too.
I got home to find we had nothing to eat so wandered aimlessly around Tesco and I just couldn’t think of anything at all! This is why I love Hello Fresh. I just do as I’m told lol, but it’s quite expensive so we usually only have it when we’re really busy. Not sure why I didn’t order one this week tbh? I do keep the recipe cards so I should start utilising them as a shopping list. Interested to see lots of ideas We ended up with bought melting middle fish cakes, crushed new pots, creamed spinach with nutmeg and a fried egg on top (fried because I couldn’t be bothered to deal with cleaning a saucepan after poaching!) |

This might be a rubbish suggestion but, do you have the Jamie Ministry of food book?
It’s all quite simple with nothing particularly out of the ordinary in the list of ingredients. You could always omit some of the herbs if they’re too overpowering. I used that a fair bit when DS was little
