Are you allowed to pack a laptop in a suitcase?

Laptops have attached or built in batteries. So no. most electrical devices expected to be carried in hand luggage only.

Well you could, but I wouldn't bank on it still being in there when you arrive! Best to place any valuables in your hand luggage as cases can be opened and searched without you being present.

One yes and one no! Now I'm confused! It's not valuable, about 10 year old!

Even so, you don't want to risk losing it surely? Value isn't necessarily about how much something is worth in terms of £

I'm only gonna use it to check my return flights as I will be on standby. No photos on it or anything personal. Just need to know whether I can or not.

Indeed. Never put anything of value in checked luggage that's out of your sight for maybe 12 hours.

You may have to take it out of cabin baggage to scan it separately but at least you can see it.
